The project 'White room 154.2cm X 154.2cm X 154.2cm X 154.2cm'
I have built a white room. Well it is not exactly a room as it only has 5 walls. In the place of the 6th wall there is an empty open space. Through this empty space you can look at and in, the space where this white room is located. You could call it a white stage, I call it a white project space. This white project space/stage can be installed on any number of sites as it only measures 154.2 cm.
In this project space “WHITE ROOM 154.2 cm X 154.2 cm X 154.2 cm X 154.2 cm", I offer a space that is very personal; white room built to the exact measurements of my height. I offer you this unlimited or limited (depends on how you see it) space.
A white stage you can enter through the door that opens in the back wall. It is a space as white as snow, nothing to hold on to, nothing to look at, nothing to hang your coat on, nothing to sit on. It is bare and white!
BUT it is tall as 154.2 cm. As Deep as 154.2 cm. It is broad as 154.2 cm. It is as small as 154.2 cm. It is as big as 154.2 cm. It is a perfect fit at 154.2 cm, for me as I am tall as 154.2 cm.
By creating a space out of my physcial limitations, my boundaries I give this nondescript space its unique character, this bare empty space its personality. I see this space as a laboratory with aim to see/ to record/ to observe/ to investigate what dimensions, frames, boundaries, limits, fences, marked territories, personal geograpghies mean to production of space in our day to day life.
I would like to invite you to perform, to act, to do rituals, to be, to inhabit it, to bring your bed to sleep in it or set up a tent in it like Sam Israel did. To stage a play on this stage, to set it up in a location and ask others to enter the space with you.
I would like to invite you to enter this space and investigate how space, its dimensions, its salient and not so salient characters influence, affect, define your actions, gestures, your negotiation of space.
This investigative 'offering' of my intimate space is a personal metaphor formulated after refelecting on the current political discussion in Netherlands; 'Nederland is vol'/ Netherlands is full, 'Allochtone-Autochoon'/Outsider-Insider', 'Becoming Dutch', 'Becoming the other'.
